On Tuesday, December 17, 2019, at the Ivan Vitić Cultural Centre in Komiža on the island of Vis, project partners BIOM and Sunce have presented the LIFE Artina project.
Zrinka Jakl from the Association Sunce presented basic information, as well as project goals and activities, especially those related to fisheries, while Sven Kapelj from the BIOM introduced the participants to the species involved in the project – Audouin’s gull, Yelkouan and Scopoli’s shearwater, and threats that they face.
Since bycatch, or incidental catches of seabirds during fishing, are one of the possible threats to their conservation, in cooperation with colleagues from the Ivo Pilar Institute from Zagreb, a survey of Komiža fishermen was conducted in order to investigate the mutual impacts of fishermen and seabirds. The aim of the research is to understand and evaluate the main negative impacts on shore and offshore bird populations and to define activities that will mitigate them. We would like to give thanks to all participants, especially fishermen from Komiža who responded and shared valuable information with us, and to the City of Komiža and the Geopark Vis archipelago for their support in organizing the presentation.
