Bycatch is one of the causes of endangerment of many vulnerable groups of marine animals, such as sea turtles, sharks, or seabirds, and it includes those species that are inadvertently caught during fishing activities.
Round table “Common approach to reducing bycatch in Adriatic fisheries” was held on March 16, 2022, in Zagreb. Scientists, decision-makers, representatives of non-governmental organizations and fishermen discussed the problem of bycatch of sensitive species in marine fisheries, potential measures to reduce it and the legislative framework in the field of nature protection and fisheries.
Association Sunce contributed to the topic by presenting seabird mitigation measures, including modified fishing gear which will be tested as part of the LIFE Artina project. Participants had the opportunity to see LED lights for nets and devices (hookpods) for floating longlines.
